All About Writing
The Westchester Park Blog is all about writing this month! November is National Novel Writing Month, and we are going to highlight the benefits of writing regularly in this post. Whether you decide to participate in National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo) or not, writing regularly can improve both your mental and physical health. We will be going over why (and how) you should write this month.
There are plenty of benefits to writing everyday. The Huffington Post reports that writing can help you heal physically and emotionally. In one study, those who wrote regularly about their deepest emotions had injuries heal faster. In another study, laid-off engineers found a job more quickly when they wrote down their feelings about being fired. Writing can help you feel more grateful, help you get a better night’s sleep, and it can help you more easily retain information. With so many benefits, there’s no reason not to start writing today.
Of course, one way to start writing this month is to participate in NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo helps aspiring novelists write a 50,000 word novel in just one month. Those who participate in NaNoWriMo can track their progress on the official National Novel Writing Month website. Writers can also find encouragement, pep talks, and other writers by visiting the website. In one pep talk, the writer Gene Luen Yang gives writers this advice: “When you write a novel, you’re not just working on the novel itself. You’re also working on the novel-building factory: your life. You have to create a life that is conducive to writing. That means scheduling regular time to write. Weekly is okay, daily is better. Writing must become a habit. If something gets in the way of your writing habit, seriously consider cutting it out of your life. You have to write even when you don’t feel like it simply because it’s what the factory does.” If writing a novel is on your bucket list, then start dedicating your time to it and write your own novel this month!
Even those who don’t want to write their own novel can benefit from writing. If you would like to keep a regular journal, there are several apps and websites that can help you out. Lifestream Blog has a list of several of the most popular diary writing apps with reviews. You can also, of course, write in a physical journal. The most important thing to keep in mind when you’re writing a journal? There are no rules. Just express yourself as often and as fully as you want to, and then reap the benefits.
